Fasting as therapy has a long tradition within medical history. Short term fasting is closely studied in relation to surgical and anaesthetic practice.  Therapeutic fasting is today more likely to lie within the province of natural health practitioners and complementary physicians.

Healthy Digestion - Even though raw foods have enzymes necessary for digestion, they are cold foods.  When too much cold food lies in the stomach, it interferes with the nerve supply to the cerebellum (lower part of the brain).  This is one reason why it is important that these foods be "warmed " before they enter the stomach.

A cold body has difficulty handling vegetable oils, and digesting cold proteins like beans, lentils, and garbanzos.  A cold body cannot break down protein.  A cold body constricts the mucous membrane lining  of the bowel, and leads to mucus accumulation in the body, with symptoms such as sinus congestion.  Digestive juices cannot get to the colon to do its work in a cold climate.  The pH of the colon is approximately 5.6.  In order to function properly the colon must have the right "climate".

Health Benefits of Acidophilus

Acidophilus improves digestion and general health naturally.  It is especially helpful when taking anti-biotics, or while traveling.

  • Provides digestive enzymes

  • Increases absorption of nutrients

  • Helps synthesize B vitamins and Vitamin K

  • Helps counteract lactose intolerance

  • Speeds up transit time in the GI tract for healthy elimination

  • Detoxifies toxins and carcinogens

  • Produces natural anti-biotic substances

  • Helps balance naturally occurring yeast in the gut

In addition to taking probiotics, here are some other simple, easy steps that will correct and maintain the bacterial balance in your intestines:

    1. Minimize your use of antibiotics because they disrupt the balance of flora in your digestive tract.

    2. Include fermented milk products in your diet, such as kefir grains, buttermilk, and yoghurt—all of which help to provide the “seed” bacteria needed to establish proper bacterial flora in the lower bowel.

    3. Include at least one generous serving of sauerkraut in your diet each week.  Several servings a week would be better. Sauerkraut is one of the few foods that contain a beneficial bacterial called L. plantarum that provides a very strong protective effect in the GI tract.
