Natural Treatments Offer Hope to People Affected by DU

from the desk of: Gayle Eversole, DHom, PhD, MH, NP, ND

Folks who are in the midst of the fields of exposure may be helped by taking kelp or iodine tablets daily in an effort to protect endocrine and immune function.

Kelp and Iodine are controversial, but many holistic physicians are using this type of treatment. Some researchers, however, advise that kelp can contain fluoride, so it may be a 'Catch 22'. The benefit may outweigh the risk in this situation.

Fluoride is an ingredient in Sarin gas that makes it burn the skin and makes it so damaging.

Water soluble iodine or natural nutritional protein bound iodine tablets are generally more effective and safer than Potassium Iodide.

Diabetes in this case may develop from loss of function of the thyroid gland, which in turn effects
function of all other endocrine glands, including the pancreas. High quality digestive enzymes and other natural pancreatic support may be helpful.

Dry Skin Brushing follow with a 30 minute tub of hot water with 4 to 5 pounds of pure sea salt and 1-2 cups of miso broth added. Drink 1-cup miso broth while soaking for thirty minutes, Finish with a cool shower.

Sea salt and Baking soda baths: 50/50 mix - is helpful to re-balance the body after exposure to radiation.

Healing Clay Baths:  This hydrotherapy treatment is effective for toxin removal.  The clay carries a negative charge and this "pulls" the toxins from your body.  There is also a 'drink' that helps pull the toxins from your stomach and intestinees.

Some treatments can be adapted for use in the field.

NEW  Essential Oil Blend for radiation exposure

Curcumin Protects Against Gamma-Radiation Induced DNA Damage
Turmeric, Curcuma Longa, Spice, Curry
Reference: "Protective effect of curcumin on gamma-radiation induced DNA damage and lipid
peroxidation in cultured human lymphocytes," Srinivasan M, Rajendra Prasad N, Menon VP, Mutat Res,
2006 Sep 12; [Epub ahead of print]. (Address: Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science,
Annamalai University, Annamalainagar 608 002, Tamil Nadu, India).
Summary: In a study in which cultured human lymphocytes were exposed to gamma radiation which
induced toxicity, DNA damage and increased lipid peroxidation, pre-treatment with curcumin - the active
agent found in the curry spice, turmeric - was found to protect cells against cellular damage. Three
different doses of gamma radiation were used (1, 2, 4Gy). At all 3 doses, DNA damage and lipid
peroxidation were induced, with the greatest damage occurring at 4Gy irradiation. Cells were pre-treated
with 3 different concentrations of curcumin (1, 5, and 10 mug/ml). The highest dose of curcumin - 10 mug/ml -
was found to protect the cells against all 3 levels of radiation-exposed damage. A dose of 5 mug/ml curcumin
protected the cells against 1Gy and 2Gy irradiation, and a dose of 1 mug/ml curcumin protected the cells
against 1 Gy irradiation. The authors of this study conclude, "…Pretreatment with curcumin gives
protection to lymphocytes against gamma-radiation induced cellular damage ."

Red Clover and Chaparral Tea helps cleanse the blood, and it seems to benefit lymphoma type reactions.  This is in the Leaflady's "Joanna's Ray-Ki Tea Blend".

Dandelion herb helps the liver and kidneys. It is high in minerals and especially vitamin A. Any help
to these organs of elimination is beneficial.  Dandelion root is especially helpful to keep blood
sugar balanced.

Eleuthero or what is called Siberian ginseng helps support the adrenal glands. Siberian Ginseng helps protects you from radiation.  High quality properly prepared products are essential for health. Other help for these
glands are bee pollen, vitamins B and C.  These glands are the 'fight or flight' center of your body and are
often exhausted in stress.

Alfalfa and spirulina may also be good to use for general support.

Five Flower Remedy and Yarrow Environmental Formula are flower essence remedies that help in anxiety and panic (Five Flower) and environmental over exposure (YES).

Thyroid testing is an important diagnostic tool.  Sadly most physicians do not order the correct set of tests to thoroughly evaluate thyroid function. This panel should at least be - ultrasensitive TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. One cannot accurately 'infer' the T3 level from TSH and T4 as many doctors claim. If immune dis-orders such as lupus and others are suspected then a reverse T3 is necessary (rT3).

The current range for TSH, since 2003, is 0.3 - 3.2.  The optimal rage is 1.5 to 2. If the reading is high
you tend to have low thyroid, if opposite you tend to have hyperthyroid. Home kits for thyroid evaluations are available through my office.

Avoid any products containing aspartame, acesulfame K and sucralose.

Please know that each individual responds to this type of environmental trauma differently. For the best results it is important to treat each person accordingly, and in relation to their symptoms.

Scientist questions use of depleted uranium munitions

Thursday, 2 November , 2006
Reporter: Rafael Epstein

TONY EASTLEY: America and Britain's use of depleted uranium munitions has again been queried by a scientist who says information about their dangers has been suppressed.

The man who worked on a definitive World Health Organisation study on the dangers of the munitions, says studies pointing to a potential problem never saw the light of day.

RAFAEL EPSTEIN: In the 1991 war with Iraq, the United States fired 320 tonnes of depleted uranium munitions. In 2003 they used as much as 2,000 tonnes. This material is used because of its ability to penetrate heavy armour, like the hull of a tank.

When the US and Britain defend their use of these materials, they sometimes cite a World Health Organisation study compiled in 2001. It brought together all the available evidence on whether or not such munitions could lead to sickness and even cancer.

Dr Keith Baverstock was a senior radiation adviser with the WHO. He told the BBC a study showing the munitions could be carcinogenic was kept out of the final report or monograph.

KEITH BAVERSTOCK: When it wasn't included in the monograph I, with two other colleagues, prepared a paper for the open literature and the WHO did not permit me to submit that paper for publication.

RAFAEL EPSTEIN: And he believes the United States helped stop the publication.

KEITH BAVERSTOCK: It is naive to think that in institutions like the United Nations one is free from political influences. The member states have their own agendas.

RAFAEL EPSTEIN: But Dr Mike Repacholi disagrees. He coordinated the entire report as head of the WHO's Radiation and Environmental Health Unit.

MIKE REPACHOLI: Depleted uranium is basically safe. You can touch depleted uranium for hours and not cause any radiation damage. You can ingest it and it's excreted through the body, 99 per cent of it goes within about a day. You would have to ingest a huge amount of depleted uranium dust to cause any adverse health effect.

RAFAEL EPSTEIN: Dr Repacholi told the BBC, the studies showing possibly adverse effects were not included at the time, because they were not conclusive and could not stand up to scientific scrutiny. Since then there have been more studies on the possible dangers caused by such weapons. They suggest that depleted uranium chemically alters DNA and could be a precursor to tumour growth.

Much of this work has been done by scientists at the US Department of Defence, but their work has since ceased.
